<p>Each UK household   produces over 1 tonne  of rubbish annually , &nbsp;all this rubbish adds up &nbsp;  to about 31 million tonnes  for the UK each year.</p>
<p>Every year, the average trash can contains enough unrealised energy  for 500 baths, 3500 showers or 5,000 hours of television.</p>
<p>If all the  aluminium drinks cans sold in &nbsp;Britain&nbsp;  were &nbsp;recycled correctly&nbsp; , there would be 14 million  fewer full &nbsp;trash cans&nbsp;  per year. The total amount of municipal waste has increased  to an estimated 29.7 million tonnes in England in 2004/05 compared to 29.1  million tonnes in 2003/04, an increase of 2.1 per  cent. That of course will be significantly higher today .</p>
<p> <strong>&nbsp;There are many companies out there that will pay you for your old cartridges&nbsp; </strong></p>
<p class="style13">Of  some 60 million<a title="inkjet cartridge" href="http://www.cartridges-ink.co.uk" target="_blank"> inkjet cartridges</a> used each year in the UK, only about &nbsp;ten percent&nbsp;  are  recycled. This means that 57 million cartridges get  thrown away each year and  end up in landfill sites or are incinerated. Inkjet cartridges will take about  1,000 years to disintegrate in landfill sites.</p>
<p>&nbsp;Sending cartridges  to landfill also costs money because of the  landfill tax passed on to consumers through council tax or companies&#8217; waste  collection costs.&nbsp;</p>
<p class="style13">The following companies (some you will of heard of), will recycle your old ink cartridges and give you or a charity some well needed cash.</p>
<p>Recycle your used ink cartridges with Boot&#8217;s the chemist and you will receive 100 Advantage Card points for each inkjet cartridge that is eligible Boot&#8217;s will &nbsp;donate 20p to charity. &nbsp;They also recycle mobile phones, digital cameras etc.</p>

<p> Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) report  in Nature today that they devised a way for lithium ions in a battery to  zip in and out about 100 times faster than previously demonstrated. &#8220;We  took a basically great material called lithium iron phosphate LiFePO4  and we tried to improve it further,&#8221; says study author Byoungwoo Kang, a  graduate student in M.I.T.&#8217;s Department of Materials Science and  Engineering.</p>
<p> Rechargeable lithium ion batteries are small and light, yet can store  copious amounts of energy,  making them ideal for use in everyday electronic devices such as iPods  and laptops. This valuable property, called energy density, can be  scaled up for hybrid cars as well as for the all-electric Roadster built  by Tesla Motors that relies on lithium ion batteries (6,831 individual  cells) and the similarly powered Chevy  Volt plug-in electric, about to hit the market.</p>
<p> One downside: lithium ion batteries do not dispense their charge&mdash;carried  by lithium ions and electrons, hence the power source&#8217;s name&mdash;very  quickly compared with some other types of storage batteries. Like a huge  auditorium that only has a few doors, getting a large volume of patrons  (lithium ions) in and out is a drawn-out affair. This phenomenon  explains why some electric vehicles (the rip-roaring $109,000 Tesla  Roadster with its massive battery pack excluded) can reach high speeds,  but they suffer from poor acceleration compared with the propulsive  force unleashed by the rapid succession of mini explosions in an internal  combustion engine. The slow exchange of ions also means lithium ion  batteries recharge slowly&mdash;just think of how long you have to charge  your tiny cell phone.<br /> &nbsp;<br /> In an attempt to pick up the pace, the M.I.T. researchers coated the  lithium iron phosphate material with an ion conductor, which in this  case was a layer of glasslike lithium phosphate. Sure enough, the  charge-carrying ions traveled much faster from their storage medium; a  prototype battery the scientists built completely charged in about 10 to  20 seconds.</p>
<p> The results have impressed some battery experts. &#8220;I think this work is a  really exciting breakthrough with clear commercial applications,&#8221; says  Yi Cui, an assistant professor of materials science and engineering at  Stanford University.</p>
<p> Two companies have already licensed the technology, according to Kang.&nbsp;  Researchers are not sure how much these batteries will cost when they  hit the market, but Kang says they should be reasonably priced, given  that it should be relatively cheap to produce them.</p>
<p> The study notes that residences cannot draw enough energy from the electrical  grid to quickly charge a hybrid car&#8217;s battery containing the new  material, though smaller batteries for gadgets and perhaps power tools  should not have that catch. But future roadside plug-in stations  (service stations selling electricity instead of gasoline) with greater  power pull could do the trick for vehicles, Kang says.</p>

With the  potential of providing energy densities up to three  times that of the  conventional <a title="Lithium-ion battery" href="http://www.lithium-stocks.net" target="_blank">lithium-ion batteries</a> found in just  about every portable consumer  electronics device going around (not to  mention the incoming wave  of electric vehicles), many companies,   including IBM and General  Motors are pursuing work on lithium-air  batteries. Now researchers  at MIT have made a breakthrough that could  help make the commercial  development of lightweight rechargeable  batteries a reality.</p>
<p>Lithium-air (also known as lithium-oxygen)  batteries are similar in  principle to lithium-ion batteries. However,<a title="lithium-air battery" href="http://www.lithium-stocks.net/1217/lithium-stocks-lithiumion-air-battery/" target="_blank"> lithium-air batteries</a> electrochemically couple a lithium anode to  atmospheric oxygen through a carbon-based  air cathode instead of the  heavy conventional compounds found in  lithium-ion batteries. This means  they are able to have higher energy density because of the lighter   cathode and the fact that oxygen is freely available in the environment   and doesn&rsquo;t need to be stored in the battery.</p>
<p>Unfortunately lithium-air batteries haven&rsquo;t  become a commercial  reality because there has been a lack of  understanding of what kinds of  electrode materials could promote the  electrochemical reactions  that take place in these batteries. Now a new  study out of MIT reports  that electrodes with gold or platinum as a  catalyst show a much higher  level of activity and thus a higher  efficiency than simple carbon  electrodes in these batteries. This new  work sets the stage for further  research that could lead to even better  electrode materials, perhaps  alloys of gold and platinum or other  metals, or metallic oxides, and to  less expensive alternatives.</p>
<p>Lead author of the paper published this week,  doctoral student  Yi-Chun Lu, explains that the MIT team has developed a  method for  analyzing the activity of different catalysts in the  batteries, and now  they can build on this research to study a variety of  possible  materials. &ldquo;We&rsquo;ll look at different materials, and look at the  trends,&rdquo;  she says. &ldquo;Such research could allow us to identify the  physical  parameters that govern the catalyst activity. Ultimately, we  will be  able to predict the catalyst behaviors. &rdquo;</p>

<p>With more and more portable gadgets finding  their way into our daily  lives, not to mention automakers turning to  rechargeable batteries to power electric cars,  the development of  lightweight batteries that can deliver lots of  energy are seen as an  important advance. Even modest increases in a  battery&rsquo;s energy density  rating &ndash; a measure of the amount of energy  that can be delivered for a  given weight &ndash; offers longer battery life for  portable devices and  greater range for electric vehicles.</p>
<p>The MIT team admits there are still a number of  issues that need to  be addressed before lithium-air batteries become a  practical commercial  product.</p>
<p>Lithium in metallic form, which is used in  lithium-air batteries, is  highly reactive in the presence of even  minuscule amounts of water.  This is not an issue in current lithium-ion  batteries because  carbon-based materials are used for the negative  electrode. MIT  associate professor of mechanical engineering and  materials science,  Shao-Horn, says the same battery principle can be  applied without the  need to use metallic lithium; graphite or some other  more stable  negative electrode materials could be used instead, she  says, leading  to a safer system.</p>
<p>But the biggest issue is developing a system  that keeps its power  through a sufficient number of charging and  discharging cycles for it  to be useful in vehicles or electronic  devices.</p>
<p>Researchers also need to look into details of  the chemistry of the  charging and discharging processes, to see what  compounds are produced  and where, and how they react with other  compounds in the system.  &ldquo;We&rsquo;re at the very beginning&rdquo; of understanding  exactly how these  reactions occur, Shao-Horn says.</p>
<p>Gholam-Abbas Nazri, a researcher at the GM  Research &amp;  Development Center in Michigan, calls this research  &ldquo;interesting  and important,&rdquo; and says this addresses a significant  bottleneck in the  development of this technology: the need find an  efficient catalyst.  This work is &ldquo;in the right direction for further  understanding of the  role of catalysts,&rdquo; and it &ldquo;may significantly  contribute to the further  understanding and future development of  lithium-air systems,&rdquo; he says.</p>
<p>While some companies working on lithium-air  batteries have said they  see it as a 10-year development program,  Shao-Horn says it is too  early to predict how long it may take to reach  commercialization. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s  a very promising area, but there are many  science and engineering  challenges to be overcome,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;If it  truly demonstrates two to  three times the energy density&rdquo; of today&rsquo;s  lithium-ion batteries, she  says, the likely first applications will be  in portable electronics  such as computers and  cell  phones, which are  high-value items, and only later would be  applied to vehicles once the  costs are reduced.</p>
<p>The MIT team&rsquo;s research appears in the paper, &ldquo;The   Influence of Catalysts on Discharge and Charge Voltages of Rechargeable   Li&ndash;Oxygen Batteries,&rdquo; which is published in the journal <em>Electrochemical  and  Solid-State Letters</em>.</p>

<p>Researchers at MIT have developed a new method of adding carbon   nanotubes to lithium-ion batteries that give the batteries the best   characteristics of both capacitors and traditional lithium-ion batteries   while simultaneously increasing their energy storage.</p>
<p>The experimental batteries, which used layered carbon nanotubes as   the positive electrode (the cathode) and a lithium titanium oxide as the  negative electrode (the anode), demonstrated an  impressive ability to  deliver power at the very fast rates of  capacitors while being able to  store more energy and last much longer  than even the best lithium-ion  batteries available today.</p>

Semiconductors are made up of millions of atoms. As we know, atoms consist of positively charged nucleus and a negatively charged electrons. When you put these two semiconductors together in sandwich, electrons become pulled from the bottom half of the sandwiched materials to the top half.
