One of the world’s greatest power sources is free and plentiful. It does not pledge allegiance to any country or person, and it doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. When studying wind power information, you will find some positive and some negative points to consider.

In some parts of the world, wind energy has become the chief supplemental power source. The most positive thing in its corner is the reality of its abundance and duration. It is not going to cease being a power at some point in the future, and it’s rather constant when viewed over a time period. What more could you ask?

The concept of air being free is not completely true. In fact, some of the energy purchased for home and commercial consumption is supplied by the wind. That should be viewed as a good thing because wind energy is not detrimental to the environment. It is also a relatively inexpensive way to produce electrical power.

What are the disadvantages to wind energy?

Where you live may be a problem. The government publishes wind maps to give broad indications of how much power can be generated from wind turbines, but that is relative to being in a wide open space. If you live in an area that may be sheltered from the wind by mountains, large buildings, or other obstructions, it won’t matter how much wind there is around you.

Wind doesn’t blow with the same intensity all the time. No matter where you live, there may be times when you cannot produce enough current for your needs, because the wind just dies. Coastal areas are good for wind turbines because of the constant breeze associated with the differences in heating of land and water. If you are not near a large body of water, you are totally dependent on the shifting wind currents.

Probably the hardest sell of wind energy comes from aesthetics. Many people can’t bear the thought of having this twirling gismo on their property. To them, it is tantamount to wearing one of the old beanie caps with a propeller on top.

If the disadvantages aren’t a problem, wind is a good way to go because of the associated positives. Solar energy is good in the daytime, but it doesn’t do anything at night or in cloudy weather. If the wind is plentiful in your area, it will provide power day and night, and in sunshine or rain. Nothing is more renewable than the wind.

Costs associated with implementing wind turbines varies a great deal based on the wind footprint as well as prices of contractors who do the work. If you are thinking of purchasing a kit to do it yourself, be careful of the many scams that can be found in the industry. Do background checks before committing to anyone.

Wind power information is like the wind itself; it goes in many directions. If you are considering an alternate power source, you should strongly consider further study of wind turbines.
