<p>If the conditions are right, you may be able to produce adequate energy for your home if you build wind power turbines and produce your own electricity.  It is a great concept that is used in many countries to supply electrical needs.</p>
<p>Wind supplied energy has become competitive with other forms of electrical production.  In commercial applications, wind turbines have proved quite successful, but in small domestic cases, the results were different.  Even though the wind is free, small turbines do not produce enough electricity for what they cost to install.  You should be sure to size yours for what your needs will be.</p>
<p>If you build your own turbine, you can save some of the costs, but it requires some expertise just to put a kit together.  When considering taking on this type of endeavor, be sure that you have what you need to do the work, and you know what to expect when the job is complete.</p>
<p>You may think you live in a windy area, but few residential locations are right for wind power.  If tall buildings and trees shelter your home, the force of the wind will not be steady.  If you live on the beach or on a hilltop, you may have the proper location that you need.  Having a tall tower is best, but you should know what the covenants in your area have to say about wind generating turbines before you decide to install one.</p>
<p>It is best to ask a professional to size a wind turbine for your site and size of home, but a rule of thumb calculation for estimating purposes is reasonably simple.  A normal home that has a good site and adequate wind currents will require a turbine with blades that are 16.5 feet from tip to tip.  This rotor diameter would need adjustment based on the conditions where you are located.</p>
<p>The generator is the heart of the system, and you should stick with a professionally built one.  Car alternators are a poor choice and other types will only lead to disappointing results.  This is a rather expensive part of the system, and you should be careful to get the one you need.</p>
<p>Some enterprising people have attempted to make their own blades.  This in commendable, but will take time to design.  For proper balance and the most efficiency, it is better to get the ready-made kind.  You want your wind turbine to be safe and not come crashing down at high speed.</p>
<p>There is a lot of information published on wind power and how to assemble kits.  Be sure to use a reputable source when ready to design yours.  Starting with the wrong information will not produce the desired results.</p>
<p>To build wind power turbines for residential homes is quite a challenge.  You should understand basic electrical concepts before you attempt such an undertaking.  Even if you are on a budget, be careful not to buy inferior products.  It is better to wait to get what you want than to construct a generator that does not produce adequate power for your home.</p>
